Dear Hempfield High School Community, 

We hope you are having a relaxing and enjoyable summer and are getting ready to start the 2026-2027 school year.  We have been busy preparing for the start of a new school year, and we look forward

to welcoming back an energized student body, ready to learn, and excited to participate in their education. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information that will be helpful when we start school on Tuesday, August 25^th.  

I’m excited to share that the first part of our building project is underway. Work is being done on the PAC to give the PAC its own HVAC system. When you visit campus, you will see some construction fencing and barricades in the parking lot behind the PAC. They have begun trenching for gas and electrical lines that will run out to Kauffman Rd. and then around our current baseball field.

As a result of this project and the impending larger work we have had to change our approach to student parking and reassign most staff parking spaces. We will share updates with students at our opening day assemblies, and post information to our 5:00pm E-News for parents/guardians to stay informed of the changes. Please note, we will utilize our traditional traffic patterns and student drop off/pick up locations the first 4 days of school. Parking permits, and changes to student drop off/pick up will take effect on Monday August 31^st.  

We are excited to embark on this building project together as a community. We will need everyone to demonstrate patience, flexibility, and understanding as we work through the changes. I will be sure to communicate changes in advance whenever possible through our 5:00pm E-News for parents/guardians and through Schoology updates for students.

Bell Schedule

The high school day will begin at 7:40 am and end at 2:50 pm.  The doors to the school will open at 7:20 am, with a warning bell at 7:30 am and 7:35 am.

At 7:40 am attendance will be taken in period 1.

Students are responsible for knowing which daily schedule we are running (Regular, Assembly, Early Dismissal etc.), the cycle day, and the WIN for each day. This information is available in Schoology.

HHS Step Up Day – Monday August 24^th

All rising 9^th grade students (Class of 2030) are expected to attend HHS Step Up Day on Monday, Aug. 24^th, before the district-wide first day of school on Aug. 25^th. This day will allow freshmen students to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings, connect with classmates, learn how to navigate the cafeteria, meet their teachers and see their classrooms before the rest of the student body returns. The day will run from 7:20 a.m. – 12:00 noon.  Breakfast and lunch, both free to all students, will be provided, along with transportation for students who typically ride the bus. Students will learn about 9^th grade expectations, walk their schedule, and participate in fun and engaging activities to get them better acquainted with the high school and an opportunity for students to connect for the first time as the Class of 2030! Students should bring a copy of their schedule, or a way to access their schedule, and nothing else, except a smile!

First Day of School Schedule – Tuesday August 25^th

We will follow the assembly schedule listed below on the first day of school.  Following period 1, all students will report to their period 2 class. Students will travel to the assembly with their Period 2 class.

AM Senior Option & Open Campus students must report to the Cafeteria by 8:20 am on the first day of school. Students arriving at this time should utilize the steps near the pre-school entrance to enter the café

WIN (What I Need) Period

The purpose of the WIN period is for the student to focus on what they need.  To help them WIN, we will run a WIN Cycle consisting of WIN1, WIN2, WIN3, WIN4, and WIN5.

• On WIN1, students spend the last 42 minutes of the day with their period 1 teacher.
• On WIN2, students spend the last 42 minutes of the day with their period 2 teacher.
• On WIN3, students spend the last 42 minutes of the day with their period 3 teacher.
• On WIN4, students spend the last 42 minutes of the day with their period 4 teacher.
• On WIN5, students spend the last 42 minutes of the day with their grade level/club/activity advisor.

As a result of the WIN cycle, students will have an additional 42 minutes with each of their teachers roughly once per week.  This time will be used to make up missing work/assessments, ask for help, spend additional time in a lab spaces, etc.  Students will still be able to get a pass to go see their other teachers if they need help in another subject area, but the class they are in for that WIN period will get priority.

The WIN schedule for the semester is available on your student’s Schoology calendar, and is included in the morning announcements. Students can see their WIN location in PowerSchool under the bell schedule view.

***We will occasionally adjust our WIN cycle to minimize the loss of WINs 1-4. This will be accomplished by moving when we have WIN5. The WIN schedule is available for students to see on their Schoology calendar. Anytime we do not run a regular schedule students should check to see how the WIN cycle has been affected. ***

 

Open Campus Courses

(School to work, Internship, Dual Enrollment, Senior Option)

Dual Enrollment Program:

Students enrolled in a Dual Enrollment Course this fall semester received an orientation to the Dual Enrollment program in the spring, but if further questions arise, please contact your counselor for any details pertaining to Hempfield High School.  If you plan to take a Dual Enrollment course in the spring semester, an additional information session will be held in the fall, date to be determined.  

School to Work Experience/ Internship:

Students participating in the School-to-Work Experience/ Internship will have a mandatory orientation. This orientation is meant to give School to Work and Internship students all the information to have a successful experience.  This orientation must be completed every new semester. For the fall of the 2026-27 school year, the orientation date is Thursday, August 27^th. Student can choose to attend either the 8:00 AM session or the 2:00 PM session, both of which are in LG 2.  

Accessing HHS (change from previous years)

Open campus students arriving for period 2 classes will need to enter HHS through the Main Performing Arts Center (PAC) Entrance. This entrance will be monitored and accessible to students from 8:45am – 9:10am. Students will be buzzed in by the monitor. Open Campus students will need to Sign In using their school ID. We will have Kiosks available for this purpose in the PAC Lobby. Open Campus students who do not arrive until period 3 will need to sign in using their school ID at a Kiosk in the Franklin or Buchanan Office.

Leaving HHS (Change from previous years)

Open campus students leaving HHS will need to Sign Out using their school ID. We have placed Kiosks for this purpose in the PAC Lobby and the Franklin and Buchanan Offices.

WIN Period

Students with an open campus course period 4 are not expected to return to school for the WIN period at the end of the day.

Students may leave after period 4 on days that the WIN period corresponds with their open campus course.  For example, students with the AM senior option would not have anything to attend WIN1, and would be able to leave.  Likewise, a student with a Dual Enrollment course pd 2, would not have a WIN2 and would be able to leave. (When leaving, students need to Sign Out at one of our kiosk locations.)

Seniors, please stay tuned for updates on Senior Privilege, which is a program that will allow you to leave when your school responsibilities for the day have been completed.  

 

Parking

Parking permits are currently on sale.  Due to the HHS Building Project, we have had to make some changes to our approach to parking this year. All parking information, as well as the online parking permit application can be found on the high school website under the  “Our School” tab, each Grade Level Information tab, as well as in the Materials folder within each class’s Schoology page.  Students must be logged into their school account to access the application.  

Tobacco & Vaping Products

Tobacco & Vaping Products are addressed under Hempfield School District policy (#222). It’s important for students and parents to understand that smoking and vaping of any type will not be tolerated at HHS. We will continue to take a progressive discipline approach to this problem, with consequences increasing for each infraction. We will also continue to offer our cessation program for students that wish to get help with a smoking/vaping problem. Students who violate policy 222 three times within two semesters will be recommended for expulsion. Students involved in extracurricular activities who violate policy 222 will have a period of ineligibility for their activity as outlined in policy 227.1 related to student use/possession of a controlled substance by a student participating in extracurricular activities.

E-Hall Pass

HHS has fully implemented the use of E-Hall pass. We will continue to use this program for student passes at HHS. E-Hall pass is a digital hall pass system that allows schools to better monitor student movement and collect data on student movement patterns throughout the day. 

Lockers & Backpacks

Lockers will not be assigned to HHS students. 

Athletes and students in extracurricular activities should work with their coaches and/or advisors if storage is needed.  (many of these items don't fit in our lockers)

Items that are not needed for school/extracurriculars should be left at home.

Students are allowed to carry a book bag.  Bags should be small enough to fit under your seat.

Students that need a locker may request one through their school counselor.  Requested lockers will be assigned at the extremities of the school so as not to interfere with student passing.  When requesting a locker, a brief explanation/rationale will help with the assignment so we can place the locker appropriately.  Lockers are only used before/after school, and for lunch purposes.

iPad Distribution

10th grade students will receive their new iPads during the first two days of school.  10^th graders will be called over the PA system alphabetically by last name to collect and setup their iPad.  Our HSD Technology team will be present and help students get up and running.  Students in grades 9,11, and 12 who turned in their iPad at the end of the school year will have their device returned to them in their first period class.

Connect with Hempfield

We encourage you to sign up for the School E-News to receive a daily 5:00pm E-mail from HHS.  If you do not wish to subscribe you can always find the “News” tab in the top red menu of the HHS web page.

The E-News will include a This Week at HHS post at the beginning of each week. This post is designed to give the reader all the information they need for what is happening at HHS each week, and will include a list of upcoming important dates. I strongly encourage families to subscribe to the E-News or check the News portion of the website at the start of the week for this informative update.

The HHS E-News is great for staying informed of what is going on at HHS. However, HSD utilizes Facebook, Instagram, and X for most of our celebrations, pictures, sports scores, and to tell our story. Please follow as you wish.

Student Schedules 

PowerSchool access is available now for students and parents to view their current student schedule. Schedules were made available for initial review in May and for students to modify their schedules in class choice. Students have been able to work with counselors to modify their schedules throughout the summer.

At this time over 95% of students have complete schedules. If you have a complete schedule consisting of classes that you requested, including alternates, this is as good as it gets. At this time our counselors are focusing their attention on creating schedules for new students and fixing errors in schedules.

We do recommend that you review your schedule closely and look specifically for scheduling errors that may have occurred.  For core area classes (i.e. Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Foreign Languages), students should be scheduled into the appropriate classes that they selected during the course selection process last spring.  The sequences and course prerequisites should be correct (e.g., Spanish 1 before Spanish 2; Algebra 1A before Algebra 1B, etc.) 

Students should contact their respective counselor if they discover an "error" on their schedule.  An "error" would consist of not being scheduled into the correct core class or being scheduled into an elective or alternate elective the student did not choose (unless the student did not select any alternate electives).  Please look at both semesters to ensure they are both correct.  Starting the first day of school, students will have the opportunity to make schedule changes through 3:00 pm, Friday, August 28, 2026. 

Final schedules will be distributed to students in Period 1 during the first day of school.

Counselor Information

Our counselors loop with students - the ninth-grade counselors follow their students through tenth grade and loop back to ninth grade.  Eleventh grade counselors loop with their students through twelfth grade.  This two-year loop provides students with supports aimed at the unique opportunities each grade presents.  The ninth and tenth grade years focus on acclimating to the high school, promoting career awareness, and planning for high school. In eleventh and twelfth grade, we continue to focus on enhancing academic and personal/social skills, but we place an even greater emphasis on post-secondary planning and the opportunities here at Hempfield High School.  We are committed to ensuring that all our students have post-secondary plans and the means to carry out those plans.  

We encourage all college-bound seniors to sign up for our College Application Bootcamp on Tuesday, August 11th. We will meet in the LG2 at 12pm noon for a presentation on various college application types, deadlines, application platforms, managing your applications and letters of recommendations in SchooLinks, as well as financial aid and scholarships. This is a great opportunity to get a jump start on your applications before the school year begins. Parents are also welcome to attend. However, we strongly encourage that you attend WITH your student.

Food Services

We are pleased to inform you that Hempfield School District will be continuing the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) in the 2026 – 2027 school year. This program is available to schools and districts that are participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.

All enrolled students attending Hempfield School District buildings are eligible to receive a nutritional breakfast and lunch each school day at no charge to your household. A la carte items such as chips, cookies, extra entrees,& beverages are an extra cost since they are not part of the reimbursable meal. These can be purchasedwith funds in a lunch account or cash.

No further action is required of you. Your child(ren) will be able to participate in these meal programs without paying a fee or submitting an application. If we can be of any further assistance, please contact us at foodservices@hempfieldsd.org or 717-898-5566.

Transportation

Your student's assigned bus numbers, stop locations, and pick-up and drop-off times will be visible in the Stopfinder app on Thursday, August 6^h. If you have not previously signed up for the Stopfinder app, a new link will be sent out to the Primary Contact as listed in PowerSchool by August 1st. If you have any questions regarding the Stopfinder app, please email transportation@hempfieldsd.org. The transportation information will appear in the PowerSchool Parent Portal on Thursday, August 6^th. All questions related to setting up a PowerSchool Parent Portal account should be directed to powerschool@hempfieldsd.org. It is important that you keep each of your students (s) contact information up to date in the PowerSchool parent portal. If you do not have either of these digital resources, an email or letter will be sent to arrive around Monday, August 10th.

Once you receive your transportation information, please make a note to check the information again the day before school starts. We will have many new enrollments, withdrawals, and changes that will require changes to transportation plans in these last few weeks before school starts. Please refer to your student(s) School for their start date at their respective facility.

Nursing

All incoming grade 12 students must provide written documentation that the student has received an MCV4 or Meningococcal A vaccine after the age of 16 to the nurses – prior to August 25, 2026.  If there has been a change in your student’s vaccinations status, or if you have any questions, please contact our nurse, Deb Krantz at deb_krantz@hempfieldsd.org

Students that require medication during the school day will need an order from a medical doctor and written parent consent, each school year requires a new medication order.  Medication forms are found on the district website under student services . Each school year requires a new medication order per PA state guidelines.

Attention Class of 2030!

We're excited to welcome our incoming Grade 9 students for Step Up Day (Freshman Orientation) on Monday, August 24!

Orientation Details:
• Time: 7:20–11:50 a.m.
• Buses will run their normal morning routes and provide transportation home following the 11:50 a.m. dismissal.
• Grab-and-go breakfast and lunch will be provided.
• Students should know their Period 1 class. A paper copy of each student's schedule will be provided in Period 1.
• No backpack or school supplies are needed.

This half-day orientation is designed to help students get comfortable navigating the building, meet their teachers, find their classrooms, and have some fun getting to know their classmates before the school year begins.

Any 7th, 8th, or 9th grade student interested in joining the Jr. High Cross Country team for the 2026-2027 school year should join the Schoology Group with the access code: 7WRWQ9KNN2. There is no sign-up; you just need to complete your ATS Portal by August 12th. Practices are held Monday-Friday, from 3-4:30, at Landisville Middle School. A shuttle bus will provide transportation from CMS to LMS after school. Pick-up will be at the LMS Cafeteria Entrance. We will have some voluntary runs over the next few weeks if you are interested. These will be posted on our Schoology Group.  

HHS Student Parking Update for 2026-27 School Year

HHS Families,

I’m excited to share that construction has begun outside of the Performing Arts Center (PAC). If you drive through campus you will notice some construction fencing and barricades have been erected. As we move further into the school year, more fencing and more construction equipment will arrive. One of the greatest challenges we will face throughout the HHS Building project will be managing the adjustments to parking, busing, and student drop off/pick up. As a result, we will adjust our approach to student parking this year. Due to construction we will not have access to the PAC parking lot. A big change to the way that we will handle parking is that students will be assigned to a specific parking lot. Seniors will be assigned to the Stadium parking lot, while Juniors will be assigned to the Quad parking lot. Unfortunately, at this time, we do not plan to issue parking permits to Sophomore this year. The number of permits sold for each lot will equal the number of spaces in each lot. We are not assigning parking spaces, but there will be a space for each permit holder in each lot. 

New this year, Seniors that are only on Campus during periods 2 and/or 3, will be eligible for an assigned space on the Buchanan side of the building. These students will need to sign an additional parking contract, and will have their high school schedule reviewed before a permit is issued.

Parking information will be reviewed with students during our opening day assemblies. It is very important that students understand the need for safe and orderly parking as we enter into our construction project. Parking permits will go into effect on Monday August 31st, and they will be strictly enforced.

HHS Parking Permits

Parking permits will go on sale beginning on Monday, August 3rd.  All parking information, as well as the online parking permit application, can be found on the high school website under the “Our School” tab, each Grade Level Information tab, as well as in the Materials folder within each class’ Schoology page.  Students must be logged into their school account to access the application.  

Parking permits may be picked up in the Franklin Office beginning Monday, August 10, 2026.  Please note that the Franklin Office is open from 7:00am - 3:30pm. 

• Permits will NOT be available for pickup on the following dates:
  • Friday, August 14th
  • Monday, August 17th
  • Thursday, August 20th
  • Tuesday, August 25th
  • Wednesday, August 26th

Permits will go into effect on Monday, August 31st, in order to give students ample time to apply for, purchase, and pick up their permits

Failure to purchase and display a parking permit will result in disciplinary consequences as outlined on the parking webpage and in the HHS Handbook.
